DIY Seaweed Mascara – Brown Black

I wanted to do Mascara that is also nourishing for the lashes. So I came up with an idea to include Sea Weed and few other ingredients in the recipe.

We’ve tried a few versions of Mascara but for those who wanted a version without eggs or minerals, here you go! We’re all looking for ways to curb and avoid chemicals that are part and parcel of buying beauty and makeup products off shelves. Right?

Mascara is one of the products that can be quite troubling, especially since you use it on your eyes. Lips and eyes are more sensitive and we’re often more careful about what we intend to put there, a reason these cosmetics are sought after when searching DIY options.

When coming up with Mascara, I not only wanted to cover the beauty aspect, but also the care aspect for my lashes. So I tweaked the recipe to suit those requirements. Now, off to the recipe!

Ingredients

Charcoal – ¾ Tsp.
Cocoa Powder – ¾ Tsp.
Vitamin E Oil – a few drops
Castor Oil – 1 ½ Tsp.
Almond Oil – 1 Tsp.
Seaweed Powder –a pinch or two
Beeswax Pellets – 1 Tsp.
Kaolin Clay – Optional

Instructions

In a double boiler melt Beeswax.

When beeswax begins to melt add in the oils – Castor Oil, Almond Oil and Vitamin E Oil.

Stir to combine.

Add in the Cocoa Powder and Charcoal Powder.

Remove from heat and mix well to combine the ingredients.

If you are adding Kaolin Clay, you can add it now.

Once combined transfer to a Mascara Tube – don’t wait as it will start to thicken real quick.

Done!

Tips to Tweak the Recipe

The Kaolin Clay is optional and can be skipped if you don’t want to add that. Or it can be substituted with Cornstarch, Arrowroot Powder or other Clays. Basically I added a pinch or two for making drying quicker – in case it takes longer than you like.

The Cocoa Powder and Charcoal Powder are both added to get a lighter Black to a Brown Black Color instead of the mundane Black – However, you can alter this ratio or just use one of these ingredients depending on your color preference. You can also reduce the quantity slightly – I added a tad more for faster drying.

Seaweed Powder is optional – I don’t get it often here and since I had it handy, and I liked the benefits it offers, I added it here. You can use suitable seaweed options that are available in your location – Kelp, Bladderlocks, Sea Palm, Kombu, Arame, Sea Whip, etc.

I have used a combination of Castor Oil for strengthening my lashes and Almond Oil for the Vitamin E content and eye soothing properties. However, you can substitute it with Coconut Oil if you prefer.

If you want to do something different, Spirulina Powder is a great option for this recipe – you can get dark green Mascara. You can add a few pinches of Charcoal Powder to make it a tad darker if you think the green is too overt.

Shelf Life

I wouldn’t recommend using any Eye Makeup for more than 3 Months especially if it isn’t dry. No need for refrigeration – besides, it can harden the recipe.
