DIY Alkanet Blush

Blush is used to get that perfect blushing cheeks, making the look complete. Do you know you can make your own blush that’s also good for the skin and doesn’t include harmful ingredients?

Today, we are going to prepare a blush from the natural ingredient Alkanet Root. Have you used or seen this root before? It is widely used in cooking to add that stunning red color to dishes, though it also has other uses.

You can prepare powdered blush, or cream blush, per your preference. Let’s take a look at how to prepare it first.

Ingredients

Arrowroot Powder – As needed
Alkanet Root Powder – As needed

Instructions

Take a spoon or more of Arrowroot Powder – you can take whatever quantity you’re looking to prepare.

Alkanet Root pieces are softer than normal roots and crumble when you press down on them. You can dry it in sun for a few hours to make it easier to crush. Sieve it for a fine powder. Alternatively, you can also use your mixer to powder it.

Add Alkanet root powder to the starch powder till you get the desired shade.

Transfer to a sterilized container and use as needed.

Tips to Tweak the Recipe

Alkanet has a deep red – maroon hue, so you might not need more of it like other coloring pigments we use. However, you can add other ingredients depending on your taste and preference.

Red or Pink Rose Petals (powdered), Red or Pink Hibiscus Petals (powdered), Beetroot Powder, Berry Powders, etc. are options you can consider.

You can also use food-coloring pigments in this recipe to vary the shade.

For a cream blush, you can either use oil, or oils and butters. Alkanet is a great choice for cream blush because this root releases the dye better in oils. The color is richer and better. Take advantage of that and with a cream blush you can also double it up as a stunning lip shade or eye shadow. This deep magenta / red is a very elegant and stunning color that spells bold and sexy, without being in your face like electric or bright red. This is one of my go-to colors for lips after brown.

How to Use the Blush?

Just use it like you would your normal blush. This is an edible ingredient and can be used on your eyes or lips without worrying about repercussions or side effects. It can double up as eye shadow, eyeliner, lip stick or lip stain, etc. You can use it wet or dry or also make cream blush as this ingredient releases its dye in oil better.

Shelf Life

You can keep this for a few weeks – check the shelf life of the Arrowroot Powder and Alkanet Powder that you’re using and go with the one with the shorter shelf life. I recommend preparing smaller batches as both ingredients will have a fixed shelf life and especially starches tend to go bad soon.
