Earlier astringents were used to regulate skin’s pH levels after using a cleaner or soap on the skin.

Nowadays, we use facial toner because soaps and cleansers have evolved into more skin-friendly, mild and less harsh on the skin. As a result, astringent is more of a choice and toners are in.

Toners are comparatively mild, often water-based and used as a connecting product between cleansing and moisturizing. Toners are used to balance the skin, get rid of any residual products or dirt that escaped the cleansing process or to get rid of excess sebum.

Toners are milder and often have other skin benefits including nourishment, anti-ageing protection or to prepare the skin for moisturizing. We have shared water-based toners before but this is alcohol-based.

Ingredients

Cypress Essential Oil – 7 Drops

Witch Hazel – 3 oz.

Manuka Oil – 10 Drops

Tea Tree Essential Oil – 7 Drops

Vodka – 1 Oz.

Instructions

Add all the ingredients to a sterilized glass bottle with a pump head for ease of use.

Shake gently and let it sit for two days before use.

How to use the Toner?

Shake the bottle before every use.

Wet a cotton ball and use the cotton ball to apply the toner of your face.

Tips to Tweak the Recipe

Manuka Oil and Tea Tree Oil are very similar in properties and their uses or benefits. So, you can replace Manuka OIl with a suitable astringent Oil like Grapefruit or other oils.

You can use any Citrus Oil along with or instead of Cypress Essential Oil.

If you’re not a fan of Alcohol you can increase the Witch Hazel instead.

You can choose suitable alternatives for ingredients in this recipe according to your requirements and preference.

Shelf Life

Though you can prepare larger or smaller batches according to your liking, this toner lasts a good two years on shelves.

No need to refrigerate but use without contaminating the toner for longer shelf life.

Use a pump or dropper to take the toner to avoid contact with the toner.

However, if the texture or aroma of the toner changes drastically please discard.

Who Can Use This Toner?

Toners are good for all skin types unlike astringents that are typically meant for oily or acne-prone skin. However, if you have dry skin or experience dryness curb the frequency of usage.

You can use this daily, twice daily especially with oily, combination or acne-prone skin.

Those with normal skin can use it once daily, or as needed.

Those with sensitive skin or dry skin can gauge the results and determine the right frequency.

However, it’s a good idea to do a patch test, use it once and wait to see the results and reactions before applying it the next day. Go with once in two days at first, and then move to daily usage.
