Using a skin scrub is a gentle but an effective exfoliation method for the skin. There are different ingredients to choose from, though the popular and affordable choices are salt or sugar.

Here’s a simple recipe that we can try for exfoliating the skin. This recipe also has salt as the base ingredient. We’re adding few choice ingredients to make the scrub easier and soothing for any skin. Let’s take a look at the recipe.

 Ingredients

Epsom Salt – 1 Cup

Grapeseed Oil – 1 Tbsp.

Jojoba Oil – 2 Tbsp.

Roman Chamomile Essential Oil – 7 Drops

Instructions

In a mixing bowl add all the ingredients together and mix well. You can add more or less oil, depending on your consistency preference. Done!

How to Use the Scrub?

Moisturize your skin. Rub this scrub on your skin and massage gently. Concentrate on areas of skin with rough or dry skin patches. Soak in, or take a shower. Follow-up by applying coconut oil when your skin is still wet. Your skin is now soft, supple and glowing.

Why This Scrub?

Exfoliating skin not only gets rid of dead skin cells and improves skin health; it also promotes better circulation and reduces the appearance of cellulite. Regular scrubbing is said to activate key points in the body and improve overall health and wellbeing.

Shelf Life

If you were planning to prepare and keep a scrub I would recommend smaller batches or mixing up dry ingredients and adding the oils later on. Many say preparing scrubs and keeping doesn’t work out sometimes, as it tends to turn runny, or the salts or sugars get dissolved leaving a goop that’s not useful as a scrub. Actually, that’s not normal but it can happen due to various reasons including the climate that can cause melting of ingredients.

Tips to Tweak the Recipe

You can add Dry Ginger Powder to this recipe for detox – it’s a well knowing detox ingredient and used in detox pads a lot.

You can add nutmeg for added shine and sheen, a relaxing and soothing aroma and for improving your skin’s health.

You can use any oil(s) for the recipe. Carrier oils can be chosen based on their availability, suitability for your skin, price, etc.  Jojoba Oil suits all skin types, though you can also use Coconut Oil, Sesame Oil, Sunflower Oil, Apricot Oil, Avocado Oil, etc. For a stimulating scrub or for pain relief, you can use Mustard oil with anti-inflammatory ingredients.

The choice of essential oil(s) is flexible too. Choose them based on your requirement and preference. Lavender Essential Oil, Sweet Marjoram Essential Oil, Rose Absolute, Citrus Essential Oils, Frankincense Essential Oil, etc. are few choices to consider.

Grapeseed Oil is considered exotic, extremely nourishing and anti-ageing. Likewise, Argan Oil, Hazelnut Oil, Walnut Oil, Emu Oil, Hemp Oil, etc. can be added instead.

As always, feel free to tweak the recipe to suit your requirements, preference, availability of ingredients and affordability. There are no hard and fast rules in DIY. These are all beginners’ recipe so there’s a lot of room to experiment and try out different things.
