Egypt is known for its art, culture and of course, mystique. There’s an air of mystery surrounding everything Egypt and that instigates curious minds to venture further and delve deeper.
With a long history of monarchy and stunningly beautiful queens hailing from Egypt, it is natural to check on their beauty regimen and practices. Right? That’s what we’re going to do here.
Egyptians were known for beautifying themselves and looking impeccable at a time when styling products were unheard of. So we’re understandably curious about what they did. Aren’t we? So, let’s find out and see what takeaways we have from their regimen.
Natural Coloring Ingredients
A lot of Egyptian statues and paintings show the women with red lips. If you were wondering how it was possible during the times when there were no lipsticks, it’s Red Ochre. They used a paste made of Red Ochre and water and applied it to their lips and face for reddish hue.
Not just Ochre, they also used henna to color it in hues of browns, copper and orange, etc. Most of their ingredients had benefits that went beyond adding beauty. Henna was known to improve the growth rate of nails and the health of skin and nails. It is also cooling and said to naturally improve rejuvenation of the body – cooling one’s body is the key to delaying ageing.
Burnt Almonds
Wondering how their brows were flawlessly black always? That’s another little trick they did with Burnt Almonds. Yes, they used burnt almonds and made a paste out of them to paint or fill in their brows. Egyptians probably inspired the eye makeup products that we see now – eyeliner, eyebrow fill, eye shadow, etc.
Oils
Oils were an integral part of their skin care and beauty regimen. They used a whole range of oils from the humble Castor Oil, to exotic and aromatic essential oils. Sesame Oil, Moringa Oil and Castor Oil were part of their skin care and beauty routine. They used these extensively to maintain their youth and beauty, while also keeping their skin nourished, nurtured, soft and supple.
Milk Baths
Masks weren’t the only way Egyptian women incorporated milk into their routines. Cleopatra who was more popular for her looks is believed to have taken regular Milk baths. It is said her flawless beauty and youthful appearance is due to her regular use of Milk for bathing.
Kohl
Who can forget their defined brows and eyes that are adorned with Kohl right? Turns out, their Kohl was nothing like what we see today! Kohl was prepared almost the same way but the lead content in their Kohl was far lesser due to the 30 days filtration process they did. The residual lead protected their eyes from sun and also improved their immunity to resist allergies. Cool, right? They also used the exotic spice saffron as an eye shadow, green malachite to outline their eyes (eye liner), etc.
Henna
We all use nail polishes to paint our nails, but do you know the Egyptian women dyed their nails in hues of orange and brown using Henna? They also used henna paste for decorating their hands and also to cover their grey hair. The best part, it really improved their health and not just looks.
Soaps
No, the ones we get now aren’t really soaps! They’re laden with chemicals and leave our skin wrung out and wanting. On the other hand, Egyptians used a paste made from Olive Oil and clay. This not only cleansed their skin, but also nourished and healed their skin making them look young longer.
Masks
Masks made a huge part of their beauty and skin care routine. They used masks made of honey and other herbs or milk for flawless and youthful skin. Honey and Milk both known for their moisturizing and hydration properties were used in most of their recipes.
