As promised, here’s the continuation on our previous post for Dry Skin & Handling it the Ayurvedic Way.
Food
Ayurveda is not just for treating a problem, but also preventing and is a lifestyle method too. It talks in detail about caring for oneself to retain one’s health and vitality. This post wouldn’t be complete or do just justice if it doesn’t include food suggestions.
Ayurveda suggests a diet that includes whole grains, greens, fruits, vegetables and nuts for wholesome nourishment. Deep fried or baked or oven-cooked food is best avoided. That’s not all. Keep a check on your coffee or tea intake. If you have aerated drinks in any form or shape, reconsider.
Ayurveda advocates the use of ghee for cooking for most part. Consider switching your oil for ghee, at least for high temperature cooking. Ghee is also a nourishing ingredient.
Also, vegetables with high water content like Melons, Radish, Cucumbers are ideal. Similarly, fruits with high water content like Water Melon, Citrus fruits, etc. are your best friends.
Coconut Water (both from mature or tender coconuts), nuts and lots of fiber keep your skin healthy and glowing. Also, it’s important to know right food group combinations that Ayurveda recommends to ensure you get most from your food.
Shut Eye
It’s mow become the trend to boast how less one sleeps – we all forget that human body is designed in a way and it needs rest for optimal functioning. Nothing drains you more than skipping or restricting your sleep hours. Our body needs a minimum of 7 – 8 hours of a good night’s sleep. While some do good with six hours, seven hours is fairly normal for most.
Get Moving
Getting adequate exercise is important. We are not talking about heavy weights and strenuous exercises here. A lot of women in Asian countries are slim and healthy even though they’ve never seen a gym. Healthy physical activity that uses all your muscles and joints is the key here – cardio, walking, jogging, etc. are good examples.
According to experts, exercises prevent accumulation of Vata and keeps metabolism alive and kicking. With metabolism in full swing, it promotes detoxification and keeps your muscles and joints in good condition.
Stress Management
Like mentioned earlier, Ayurveda is more a lifestyle medicine in my opinion. It has a lot of helpful ideas and ways to improve one’s quality of life and practical suggestions everyone can follow. Pranayama and Meditation are integral part of Ayurveda. Do you know many sleep better with regular meditation? It’s also a great stress buster. You can also perform better when you take time to meditate regularly.
Love Yourself
We’re not talking about vanity. But, it’s important to understand that your body is your real life partner. You need to care for it and love yourself enough to make sure it’s in top-notch condition. We all sacrifice our health for one reason or the other – but are it really worth it? Does it help in the long run? Ask these questions before you decide to put something else before your health.
Weather
We don’t have a lot of control over weather. But, we can tune our lifestyle around it. When it is extremely hot – we can wear breathable clothing and not head out when sun is at its peak. If it is winter, we can wear thermals or woollen clothing to keep ourselves warm and skin protected. Avoiding extreme weather and making sure your skin care routine and lifestyle is altered according to the weather is given importance in Ayurveda.
