If you calculate how much you’ve spent on moisturizers for a few months or a year, you would know how much DIY can cut down on your costs for skin care. This nourishing, chemical-free seabuckthorn enriched moisturizer is just one of the recipes you can try.
We are all living in a fast-paced world, where there’s little time for anything else. Along the way, we’ve adapted to things to make our life easier but at what cost? Today, most skincare and beauty products are laden with chemicals that are better off left alone.
However, the truth is many don’t know that and even if they know, they don’t know they have alternative and affordable solutions! Going DIY is one such solution and for those who can’t there are organic, natural and cruelty-free alternatives.
Ingredients
Pomegranate Seed Oil – 30 Ml
Seabuckthorn Oil – 2 Tsp.
Vitamin E Oil – 1 Tsp.
Kokum Butter – 7 Gms.
Beeswax – ½ Tsp.
Aloe Vera Gel – 1 Tbsp.
Witch Hazel – 1 Tsp.
Rose Water – 2 Tbsp.
Instructions
In your double boiler, melt the Beeswax and Kokum Butter.
When it begins to melt, stir to combine.
When almost melted, add Seabuckthorn Oil, Vitamin E Oil and Pomegranate Seed Oil and remove from heat.
Stir to combine and let it cool down – at this stage you can transfer the mixture to the whipping jar you are going to use for blending / whipping.
When it cools down to room temperature and becomes slightly opaque but a semi solid mixture, it is time for whipping.
Now, measure the Aloe Vera Gel, Rose Water and Witch Hazel and add them to a bowl and have it handy.
Begin blending the oil – wax mixture on medium – high. As you blend, slowly introduce the water-based ingredients you’ve measured and kept handy.
Make sure you introduce the water-based ingredients while whipping, really slowly.
It is a good idea to refrigerate the water-based ingredients or even the oil – wax mixture to reduce the possibility of the mixture heating up during emulsification.
When all the water-based ingredients are added, continue whipping for a few minutes – till the mixture is emulsified.
Transfer the moisturizer to a sterilized jar and use as needed.
Why These Ingredients?
This is a day moisturizer, so I did not want ingredients that will make skin sensitive to sun.
I chose neutral ingredients that would suit most skin types and also ingredients that are extremely moisturizing, suitable for use during the day and easy to prepare.
I also wanted anti-ageing and repairing ingredients to combat ageing and skin damage due to sun exposure or pollution.
Most of the listed ingredients are ones we’ve already used in different recipes and needs no introduction.
Tips to Tweak the Recipe
You can choose your preferred waxes, butters and carrier oils for the ones listed in the recipe – prepare a moisturizer that would suit your skin and requirements. There’s nothing wrong with that.
I have used Beeswax for its emulsification though you can substitute it with true emulsifiers.
Shelf Life
I have used the recipe for a few weeks without refrigeration – around two months. Refrigeration prolongs its shelf life. However, I recommend refrigeration in case you live in tropical countries, or just as a precaution – we don’t use preservatives here except Vitamin E Oil.
