DIY Primer

Want to give the pricey primer a boot and prepare your own version of the primer? Here’s an easy DIY Primer you should try!

What is a Primer?

Before we move to the recipe, let’s take a look what a primer really is. A primer is a product that prepares your face for makeup, a base product that is applied even before a foundation. It helps improve the staying time or capacity of makeup and also makes your skin even and moisturizes it to make applying or blending in foundation, easier. It controls the oil around T zone and improves the final results of makeup, besides making your makeup stay, longer. So, if you found yourself coming back home after an exhausted day at work and stare your face in the mirror flinching at your efforts the morning at concealing or sprucing up your face gone to drain, you need a primer!

However, finding an ideal primer or even one that suits your bill can be a tough ask! I rummaged through a number of primers and had mixed results. Why spend a fortune on a product you can prepare yourself, or just mix-up at home? Yes, I am going to list an option for a complete but simple recipe that would do the job of a primer, or mixing up a good primer by combining a few products. Ready?

Ingredients

Rhassoul Clay / Cosmetic Clay – ½ Tsp.
Aloe Vera Gel – 4 – 6 Tsp.
Arrowroot Powder – ½ Tsp.

Instructions

Take the Aloe Vera leaf and make a slit with a sharp knife at the edges to open the leaf. Now, remove the gel from the leaf using a spoon. You could use a blender or a mixer to mash the gel.

In a bowl, add the clay and arrowroot powder along with Aloe Vera and mix to combine. You can use a blender to combine the ingredients without any lumps.

Transfer to a sterilized container and refrigerate. Use as needed.

Alternative Versions Using Foundation

You can use Aloe Vera Gel (2 Tbsp), Coconut Oil (1 Tsp.) and foundation powder, to create a good primer you can use. Just combine the ingredients and refrigerate. Use as needed.

You can also add your moisturizing lotion or Aloe Vera Gel, along with your concealer or foundation for a simple primer. The quantity can vary depending on whether you prepare everyday, or a batch for every few days. Remember to refrigerate if you use Aloe Vera gel.

For a more elaborate tinted moisturizer cum primer and concealer, you can do this: Take equal quantities of Aloe Vera gel and moisturizer. Add a little sunscreen, followed by liquid foundation and compact powder. Mix well and use it as needed. You can prepare this everyday, or prepare a batch and refrigerate. If you use mineral powder, you will get shiny finish.

Basically, a primer prepares your face for makeup and works like a base makeup. It improves the staying power of your makeup, and also the way it looks on your face. Many say their eye shadow or blush looks better and more visible with primer applied. The above given DIY recipe is an efficient primer, though you can also use a few products and mix-up your own version if that’s easier. This way, you can come up with a product that works for you.
