DIY Moisturizing Sunscreen Stick

Here’s another moisturizing sunscreen recipe that’s easy and works wonders for your skin, besides doubling up as a moisturizer.

Sometimes, it is quite difficult to get the orders right – moisturizer, primer, foundation, concealer, corrector, etc. So, combining to create something that does double duty is always a good idea. That’s how I came up with this idea. Besides, you can never say moisturizer isn’t needed. Right?

So, I came up with the idea to tweak one of my recipes and prepare a sunscreen stick. Let’s take a look at how it is done.

Ingredients

Almond Oil – 3 Tbsp.
Cupacu Butter – 4 Tbsp.
Zinc Oxide – 3 3 Tbsp.
Beeswax – 1 Tbsp.
Vitamin E Oil – a few drops
Raspberry Seed Oil – 7 – 10 drops

Instructions

Melt the Cupacu Butter and Beeswax in your double boiler.

When fully melted, remove from heat.

Add Almond Oil and Vitamin E oil and set aside.

After it cools down fully, stir in the Zinc Oxide and Raspberry Seed Oil.

Mix well to combine. You can also use a whisk or your blender if it makes the combining easier.

Don’t blend too much, though – just enough to combine the ingredients well.

Once done, transfer to a sterilized dispenser – something that’s bigger than a lipstick or lip balm dispenser works best.

Let it set – take a few hours.

Done!

How to Use It?

Slowly roll the sunscreen on your skin – it melts slowly and forms a coating on your skin. If you want, you can use lotion bar moulds and use them as sunscreen bars instead – for those who find it difficult to use from the dispenser.

Tips to Tweak the Recipe

Depending on your preference for hardness – you can add more or less beeswax – to make it easier to melt on your skin.

You can add essential oils though it isn’t needed – I have raspberry seed oil that’s also an essential oil and gives a subtle aroma. But it is more for sun protection here than the aroma!

You can swap the ingredients for other ingredients that offer sun protection – Almond Oil – you can use Coconut Oil instead, or in fact, any other oil you prefer. Since we also use Zinc Oxide, you don’t have to worry a lot about SPF of the other ingredients if you don’t want to.

You can also add Titanium Dioxide to give this recipe a jump. I also like the way Titanium Dioxide looks, so I usually add a bit of that too.

You can use Shea Butter if you don’t get Cupacu Butter, or any other butter you have available. I like Cupacu Butter for the many benefits it offers, including sun protection. We always use Shea or Cocoa Butter, so it is a nice change 😉

I like that it does a really good job at protecting the skin from the sun, also helping a bit with healing and soothing. It is also not very greasy, probably because I use lesser beeswax. I would say this offers 90%, if not more protection and that’s a winner in my opinion – better than most store-bought sunscreens for a fraction of their cost. Don’t you think?
