DIY Mineral Makeup Base for Oily Skin

With an oily skin, getting makeup right is tricky – you don’t want to exacerbate oil and trigger acne or pimples, you don’t want your makeup to look cakey, you want patchy makeup, etc.

With all these things in mind, making makeup for Oily Skin is easier than you probably think. Besides when you use mineral raw materials for your makeup, it also keeps your skin’s oil levels in check and curbs breakouts.

I had a few considerations when I started working on a makeup base for oily skin – I did not want something that will make skin look shiny and also, I wanted it to curb acne and soothe my skin while also keep oil levels under check. Want to know the recipe, first?

Ingredients

Sericite – ¼ Tsp.
Silica – a pinch
Zinc Oxide – ¼ Tsp.
Arrowroot Powder – ¼ Tsp.
Kaolin Clay – a pinch
Calcium Carbonate – a pinch
Green Oxide – a teensy tiny pinch

Instructions

Add all the ingredients to a mixing bowl except Green Oxide.

Combine mechanically to combine all the ingredients – takes a couple of minutes.

Now, add the Green Oxide and combine again.

Make sure there are no streaks and the mixture is uniform.

Transfer to a sterilized container.

Why These Ingredients?

Zinc Oxide is not just for coverage, but also for soothing your skin and curbing acne breakouts. Zinc oxide has been used to treat acne for a while now. Unlike Titanium Dioxide, this is also a little more opaque and matte and doesn’t give the slight sheen that Titanium Dioxide gives.

I chose green oxide for this base – as it covers the redness if any. This is optional and can be skipped if you don’t want it. If you add – make sure to add a very small pinch. A little goes a long way for oxides unlike Mica where you can get away with adding a tad more.

Kaolin Clay is soothing and keeps your agitated or irritated skin (common with oily and acne-prone skin) calm. It also absorbs excess oil and gives a matte look.

Arrowroot Powder is easier on the skin and more suited for sensitive skin types, compared to cornstarch (you can use that if you are fine with it). This is also helpful to curb oil and it doesn’t irritate the skin like corn flour can.

The other mineral ingredients are the raw materials we need for the base and lend their unique properties for texture and finish we’re going with for this base.

**Silica can be a tad difficult to blend. In that case, add the ingredients to a cover and gently mix the ingredients using your fingers (from the outside by rubbing your fingers on the cover) to blend it in.
