Combination skin requires extra care and attention. Products you pick or the ingredients are very important to ensure your skin isn’t triggered. Here’s an easy lotion recipe you can try if you have combination skin.
So, let’s take a look at our Ingredients.
Ingredients
Aloe Vera Gel – 1/3 Cup
Coconut Oil – 4 Tbsps.
Beeswax – 1 Tbsp.
Sandalwood Essential Oil – 10 Drops
Instructions
In a double boiler, melt the Jojoba Oil and Beeswax.
When the ingredients are melted, about 2 – 5 minutes, remove from heat.
In a mixing bowl, add the essential oil and Aloe Vera Gel and blend the ingredients using your stand-in blender / food processor.
When the oil and wax mixture cools down, begin adding the Aloe Vera mixture slowly and whip the ingredients.
You can decide if you want all the gel used up or reduce it based on the consistency as you whip.
I usually whip for 7 – 10 minutes to get the right consistency and for all the ingredients to combine thoroughly.
Transfer to a sterilized jar.
Tips for the Recipe
You can substitute the essential oil and use a citrus essential oil for an uplifting scent for calming your skin and keeping skin problems at bay. However, I did not use citrus oil here in my recipe because Aloe Vera Gel has Citric Acid added as a preservative. Besides, citrus oils can cause photosensitivity.
I prepare batches of Aloe Vera gel from time to time and used it. I usually get a few leaves of Aloe Vera. Let the resin drain completely after peeling off the skin. I remove the white flesh of Aloe Vera leaf and whip it up in my blender with Vitamin C capsules as a preservative. This way, I use it whenever I need it. You can also use store-bought Aloe Gel, though make sure it doesn’t contain artificial preservatives.
I use Coconut Oil because I love the versatility it has to offer and it suits my skin well. However, Jojoba Oil works well, too. You could also use other combination skin friendly carrier oils like Carrot seed oil, Aloe Vera Oil, Sunflower Oil, Passion Fruit Seed Oil, Grapeseed Oil, Tamanu Oil, etc.
Tips to Tweak the Recipe
You can substitute Beeswax with Candelilla Wax.
You can use any essential oil you prefer, because it is added for fragrance here. I have picked ingredients that are suitable for combination skin best and this proportion worked best for me.
You can use a few drops of Vitamin E Oil, though I prepare smaller batches and use up sooner. Since it is not entirely oil based, it is a good idea to prepare smaller batches.
How to Use the Lotion?
Just use it like you would a moisturizer and preferably, it is ideal to be applied after a shower. You can use this for your face too!
