DIY Anti-Microbial Spray

There are times when traveling resulting in exposure to unclean environment or susceptible conditions, or even just hormonal change or seasonal changes affect us differently. Skin is the first point of impact and an anti-microbial spray is just what you need to counter it head-on.

I wanted a spray type option to handle the problem this time around as it is more travel-friendly and easy to use than creams or butters. With a spray there’s no need for rubbing or waiting. It’s just spray and go – the spray is absorbed in no time and vanishes, so no mess and no fuss. So, I wanted that as an option this time around. So, let’s see what we have here.

Ingredients

Denatured Alcohol / Witch Hazel – 3 Oz.

Thyme Essential Oil – 7 Drops

Lavender Essential Oil – 25 Drops

Tea Tree Oil – 7 Drops

Cedarwood Essential Oil – 4 Drops

Instructions

Nothing much! Just add all the ingredients to a sterilized spritzer and give it a gentle shake. Let it sit for a day or two and then it’s good to go. You can also use it once it’s prepared.

Why These Ingredients?

Denatured Alcohol is a base that’s useful when you want something that’s not oily and disappears real quick but also don’t have access to Witch Hazel. With oily skin alcohol works but for those with dry skin, or sensitive skin shouldn’t go this route. Witch Hazel is a safer route for most and my preferred choice of base.

The best part about Witch Hazel is that It’s one of the best astringents and has been in use since time immemorial. It’s also a great skin care aid that is healing and can soothe inflammation. Bruises, wounds or even muscle aches? You need to grab Witch Hazel now!

Thyme Essential Oil not only smells great but is also a good antiseptic and gets rid of a host of skin issues including acne or pimples.

Lavender Essential Oil not only has a soothing and calming effect and aroma, it is also antiviral and antiseptic.

Tea Tree Essential Oil needs no introduction and is good against bacteria, fungi or yeast. It’s also an antiseptic and used for treating several skin conditions.

Cedarwood Essential Oil is musky and a mild anesthetic but also a good fungicide and antiseptic. It’s used to treat wounds and dandruff.

Tips to Tweak the Recipe

You can substitute the ingredients with other equivalent ingredients of your choice.

Other ingredient that will make a great addition here is Geranium but due to the floral aroma I did not use it here. I wanted something neutral so everyone can use it. Geranium is antiseptic, antifungal, astringent and also great for combating yeast. It is used to promote healing and has a soothing scent.

Peppermint Essential Oil is great antimicrobial aid that’s also cooling and leaves you feeling fresh in no time. I use that in this recipe from time to time.

Eucalyptus is a great antimicrobial aid and can be used in this recipe with good results. Unlike a few other options like Oregano it is mild on the skin and suitable for most.

How to Use the Spray?

Just sprit or spray on your skin and you’re done! Note: This is not for your private or sensitive areas.
