When your skin begins to show signs of ageing, or around the time when you feel you should start your anti-ageing regimen, using products that double up is a good idea. This is an anti-ageing moisturizer that keeps your skin supple and young, while also moisturizing it.
The recipe is quite simple and we add only very few ingredients, but don’t let that fool you. This works well as both a moisturizer and an anti-ageing cream! I use this as my moisturizer, so there’s no restriction on when you have to use, just use this in place of your moisturizer. Let’s look at the recipe first, shall we?
Ingredients
Shea Butter – 1 Tbsp.
Sweet Almond Oil – 4 Tbsp.
Avocado Oil – 1 Tbsp.
Elemi Essential Oil – 20 Drops
Sage Essential Oil – 10 Drops
Instructions
In your double boiler, melt the Shea Butter along with Avocado and Sweet Almond Oil.
When melted, remove from heat and wait for a few minutes so the mixture can cool down slightly.
Now, add the essential oils and stir to combine.
Refrigerate till the mixture solidifies slightly, but don’t wait till it is fully opaque.
Now, use your blender to whisk the ingredients to combine.
When the mixture is fluffy, transfer to a sterilized container.
Tips to Tweak the Recipe
You can swap or switch the ingredients listed above with what works you best. I chose Shea Butter, as it is non-comedogenic and fairly light. If you have dry skin, you can switch to richer butters like Cocoa Butter.
I also add a Tbsp. of Vitamin E Oil to this recipe. The whipping usually makes the cream lighter and I either, swap a Tbsp. of Vitamin E Oil for Avocado, or increase the quantity of Shea Butter.
You can also use other anti-ageing essential oils like Geranium, Myrrh, Frankincense, Lavender, etc.
I prefer Avocado Oil as it is extremely nourishing, anti-ageing and also, a very good moisturizer. However, if you find it rich, you can swap it with Apricot Kernel Oil, Coconut Oil or even Argan Oil. They’re anti-ageing too.
Depending on the consistency, you can alter the proportions of the recipe to suit your preference. You can prepare more or less, and alter the ratio of ingredients accordingly.
Shelf Life
Though the recipe lasts good longer, since only oils and butters are used, I usually prepare a fresh batch every month or two. I prefer keeping the batches small and thus the contents fresh.
Why These Ingredients?
All the ingredients listed above are anti-ageing and contributes to a more youthful and supple skin.
Sage Essential Oil is an antifungal, antiseptic, antimicrobial, disinfectant and antioxidant. It is a cicatrisant, which means it can help get rid of spots and marks. This means, age spots and other blemishes would be taken care of.
Elemi Essential Oil belongs to the Frankincense family and has been used for ages for its anti-ageing properties – its ability to delay wrinkles and fine lines.
Sweet Almond Oil is light but effective anti-ageing oil that’s also rich in Vitamin E. It nourishes, moisturizes and heals your skin, without making it look greasy.
Avocado Oil is rich and effective anti-ageing oil that’s also extremely nourishing and moisturizing, besides helping with skin healing. It is particularly good if you have dry, mature or ageing skin.
Shea Butter is a solid butter that’s also anti-ageing, protects your skin from skin and also, nourishes and moisturizes your skin. The best part – it is light and doesn’t leave your skin greasy.
