DIY Acne Cream with Zinc Oxide

I always knew Zinc Oxide works wonders for acne. So, I decided to use that in my acne cream.

This way, the cream will also be light and won’t be greasy, it will keep acne at bay and can also double up as sun protection when needed.

Being in a tropical country, sunscreen is needed most part of the year. But I use it only when I head out during peak hours like noon. Other times like early morning or early evening I enjoy the sun – need my dose of Vitamin D.

Ingredients

Zinc Oxide – 1 Tsp.
Tea Tree Oil – 5 Drops
Aloe Vera Gel – 1 Tsp.

Instructions

Just add the above given ingredients – Zinc Oxide, Tea Tree Oil & Aloe Vera Gel to a mixing bowl.

Whisk to combine – I like blending the Aloe Gel first and then adding other ingredients and using a spatula to combine.

Done!

Why These Ingredients?

Zinc Oxide is one of the key ingredients in mineral makeup and the reason they’re popular for keeping acne at bay!

We need a base – something that’s soothing and can keep the zinc oxide creamy easy to apply – I chose Aloe Gel as it is light, soothing, healing and also doesn’t look greasy or oily. The best part is – it disappears after you apply it on your skin.

I use Tea Tree Oil here for its acne fighting properties and to keep inflammation and infections – common with acne at bay.

Tips to Tweak the Recipe

For those who don’t like Aloe Vera Gel you can also use Gelatin or even Flax Seed Gel.

For those who don’t like Tea Tree Oil, or if you want to add a little aroma, you can also use Lavender Essential Oil, Rosehip Seed Oil, Frankincense Essential Oil, Clary Sage Essential Oil, etc.

How to Use the Cream?

Use this every night till acne subsides and then three times a week or less, as per your requirement.

Pointers to Remember

When you buy Zinc Oxide, make sure it is non-nano Zinc Oxide. You can also use Zinc Oxide cream along with a dash of Aloe Vera Gel.

You don’t want to inhale the Zinc Oxide or allow it to penetrate your skin. For this reason, it should be non-nano sized.

The larger particles are good and the Zinc Oxide you buy should be tested for presence of heavy metals – you don’t want them in your Zinc Oxide.

I prefer fresh Aloe Gel – I make sure to get rid of the green stuff (latex) that oozes out from Aloe Leaf and wash it well even after removing the gel from the leaf.

I also prepare smaller batches, as I don’t want to add anything else for this cream – though you can use a dash of Vitamin C to extend the shelf life of Aloe Gel. Since I have sensitive skin, I prefer to avoid it whenever I can. But if you don’t mind the Vitamin C, feel free to add it – it leaves your skin radiant 😉
