DIY Lip Liner

Right, it looks like it is impossible to do it. But it is very much possible, and I would like to share how I did it with you all. Ready?

First of all, there are different ways to do the Lip Liner. Some are easier, some aren’t. I am sharing one of the easier recipes, while the more professional one will be added soon.

I wanted this recipe to be easier and simple, and not very complicated. You know, something that can be done by everyone without using a lot of gadgets and gear. So, here you go!

Ingredients

Beeswax – 1 Tsp.
Brown Iron Oxide – a pinch or two
Black Iron Oxide – a smidgen (optional)
Coconut Oil – 1 Tsp.

Instructions

Melt Beeswax and Coconut Oil in your double boiler.

When fully melted, remove from heat and add the Oxide Pigments – till you get the desired color. Depending on the pigment you buy, you might need more or less than what we’ve mentioned here.

Mix well and once fully combined, use a syringe to transfer this.

Set aside to set.

How to Transfer

Basically, you can either use a drinking straw or the wooden part of the pencil. I could not get hands on the pencil (you can get it from those who supply raw material for cosmetics or pencils), so opted for straw. I chose the straw that is slightly hard so it can hold and also because it is fairly thinner than counterparts.

I sealed one part of the straw and then injected the mixture when it is still melted into the straw and let it set. Once set, I cut a portion of the straw so I can sharpen the visible portion and use it as a pencil. Cool, right?

Why These Ingredients?

I wanted a Brown or Deep Brown Matte Lip Liner, so I chose Brown and Black Pigments (to get a darker shade). However, you can choose any color pigments to go with your lip color or lipstick.

I wanted something simpler and one that works, so I went with a fairly basic recipe. But it works. However, the Beeswax – Coconut Oil ratio can vary with the quality of the wax and results you want. For most part, I liked the results with doubled or trebled quality of oil to wax, though the truth is, you can even use 1/4th or less.

Tips to Tweak the Recipe

You can also add Shea Butter, if you want a richer, nourishing and moisturizing Lip Liner. I sometimes do that, especially when preparing a larger batch for gifting.

Since we are only using Butters and Oils, I haven’t needed emulsifiers. However, if you add Honey or Aloe Gel or the like, you might need an emulsifier. Remember, Beeswax works for most part, but it isn’t an emulsifier!

Try this out and let us know how it works out for you. Like mentioned earlier, find out the ratio of Oil – wax that works for you. If it did not come out right the first time around (color not sticking to your lips when you apply), melt it and start again, by adding more oil and color pigments and see if it helps with fixing it.
