DIY Shimmering Burgundy Lip Gloss

Lip Gloss is one of my favorites, as it moisturizes my lips and gives it a nice sheen, without leaving it high and dry. So, here’s a quick and easy I tried recently with good results.

Basically, I was looking at a Burgundy Lip Gloss, with some shimmer added it. Yes, I wanted mineral ingredients for shimmer. I did not want something very complicated, rather simple, but one that works. The best part – this also lasts a good few hours, so I had to touch only once during the day.

Ingredients

Castor Oil – 1 ½ Tbsp.
Shea Butter – ¼ Tsp.
Coconut Oil – 1 Tsp.
Beeswax – ¼ Tsp.
Shimmering Burgundy Mica Powder – 2 Tad
Red Blue Mica Powder – 1 smidgen

Instructions

Where I stay, Coconut Oil is usually liquid in room temperature.

So, I add the Mica powders to a mixing bowl along with Castor and Coconut Oil and mix thoroughly. There shouldn’t be any lumps of streaky mixture. The color should combine evenly. However, if Coconut Oil is solidified, melt it along with butter and wax and use Castor Oil to mix the Mica.

In a double boiler, melt the Shea Butter and Beeswax and when fully melted, add the oil and mica mixture. Stir to combine. When fully combined remove from heat.

Transfer to sterilized Lip Gloss containers and use as needed.

Tips to Tweak the Recipe

I like my gloss fairly solidified, so the wax and butter, but if you want a lighter finish, reduce or eliminate the wax and butter. That will give you store-bought gloss consistency. I would suggest skipping Beeswax and using Shea Butter alone, but a tad lesser.

I have used Coconut Oil and Castor Oil in this recipe, as I like my gloss to be moisturizing. You can however use carrier oils of your choice including Avocado Oil, Olive Oil, Sesame Oil, etc.

You can also add a few drops of Vitamin E Oil to the recipe. I always do that, to enrich the recipe and also, improve the shelf life of the recipe.

You can add a few drops of Therapeutic Grade EO for added aroma and benefits, though I don’t do that usually. If you are using EO in your gloss, make sure they’re organic and edible grade.

You can use any color pigments in the recipe, not just Burgundy. Choose the color pigments according to your requirement, preference or taste. You can go with Mica based pigments if you want shimmer, or Iron Oxide Pigments for Matte finish.

Remember: Always use color pigments that are approved for use on the lips. Most online shops list if the pigments are safe for using on lips or eyes.

Shelf Life

This usually lasts long. It is a good idea to check the expiry date of the ingredients and go based on that. Since we are using oils or waxes or butters, they have good shelf life. However, go with the one that has the shortest shelf life to determine how long you can keep the gloss.
