DIY Prickly Heat Powder for Normal Skin

Come summer, heat wave and heat rash are problems we all resent. Don’t we? Here’s a way to deal with prickly heat rash – with a dash of Cinnamon!

The best part about having normal skin is that, you can almost try anything and everything without worrying about repercussions! So if you don’t have sensitive skin, this powder would work wonders for you. It is also good if you have oily skin, since cinnamon can tone down the oil levels or prevent breakouts. However, if you have dry or sensitive skin, exercise caution! Try a small area before bathing with this powder 😉

However, I must add, this powder works wonders to curb prickly heat rash that is triggered due to excess sweating. This powder keeps you cool and dry, so you can avoid prickly heat, while also smelling wonderful.

Ingredients

Cornstarch – 1 Cup
Cinnamon Powder – 2 Tbsp.

Instructions

In your blender, add both the ingredients and start the blender.

It should take a minute or two for the ingredients to combine well.

Transfer to a sterilized jar and use as needed!

How to Use it?

Sprinkle this powder on your skin after showering and drying off. I like the results better when I apply this right after a shower, as it allows the ingredients to touch the skin’s surface without dirt and grime barring it.

I also noticed refrigerating it made the powder feel cool when applied / dusted on skin, especially when the harsh sun rays during summer try to suck your skin’s life out.

Tips to Tweak the Recipe

You can add a few drops of soothing Essential Oils like Lavender, Chamomile, Geranium, etc. They give the recipe a nice aroma, and the oils soothe the irritated or inflamed skin.

I also add a gram of Menthol Crystals so the powder would give the characteristic Menthol’s cooling effect, and I don’t have to refrigerate the powder that way.

You can swap the Cornstarch with Arrowroot, especially if you are prone to acne. I noticed Arrowroot is also more delicate on the skin.

You can reduce the Cinnamon – Starch ratio, depending on your tolerance for the spice. But nothing beats Cinnamon when it comes to beating prickly heat rash and microbes. So, if you are able to stomach this ratio, go with it.

Shelf Life

I usually prepare fairly large batches since I use prickly powder for most of summer, and before summer really sets in. The recipe lasts longer, but I usually go with the expiry date or shelf life of the starch and Cinnamon powder I am using. Checking the expiry dates for the ingredients will give you an idea of how long it will hold good, so prepare the batches accordingly.
