DIY Natural Clay Mascara

Mascara is one tricky beauty product to master and this one worked like a charm for me. Try it and you won’t be disappointed.

Irrespective of where you live, getting your mascara stick without becoming runny is a tough ask. Being in a tropical country, I wanted mascara that will last and not go runny on me. Who wants to look like a Goth queen, or like someone who was crying a river no less than five minutes back? Right?

I have had my share of hits and misses with mascara and though some recipes work, some weren’t my favorites, or I just wanted to change or have options. I wanted something that will last, won’t look artificial, and at the same time nourish my lashes.

I had a haphazard attempt in my kitchen once where I burnt a few hairs and had to hide it urgently before guests dropped in. I had nothing handy, so I whipped up a quick cover-up with my clay mask and added my black and brown eye shadow and used that on my hair. I actually noticed it dried up quickly and looked neat.

Since I have never had much success with commercial mascara due to my sensitive skin, I thought I will whip up my own. I did not use a lot of beauty products, anyway. I have been eyeing Mascara but had issues the first time I tried one. So, I wanted try something different and with some research came up with this recipe that works for me.

Instructions

In a mixing bowl, add the clays, glycerin and china grass powder.

Add water to mix the ingredients well.

Voila! Your Mascara is READY!

Why These Ingredients?

Like mentioned earlier, living in a tropical area meant lot of perspiration and soaring temperature. Mascara can turn runny easily, especially when wax is involved.

Also, using oil means the mascara won’t dry adequately or turn runny and leave spots on my skin.

So, I wanted something that will dry out once I apply and stay on, without becoming runny. So that eliminated using oil and wax for me!

Only clay and water can make it drier and that’s not something I wanted. Glycerin fixed that problem for me.

The China Grass gave a gel consistency and kept the ingredients together, so they don’t leave spots on my lashes and instead, stay put together.

Tips to Tweak the Recipe

I used a combination of Black & Red Clays, so I get a deep brown shade. If you want it more Black, you can avoid using Red Clay, or reduce it.

I sometimes add a pinch of Red Iron Oxide for this recipe, or go with Kaolin Clay and add Oxide Pigments for color.

You can add a few drops of Lavender or Chamomile EO for added fragrance and soothing effect. They’re gentle and won’t harm the skin around your eyes.
