DIY Concealer for Complete Coverage

Concealer is a product women use to hide scars and marks regularly. When working, women meet a lot of people and appearance plays a key role in their confidence levels. That’s one reason why concealers are a popular cosmetic aid women grab for sprucing up their looks. Want to try an easy concealer recipe?

Concealers don’t come cheap. Besides, the ingredients aren’t high quality, often toxic and not all products come with a complete ingredient list. Even when you shell out a fortune, you hardly know what goes into your skin. Besides, how many of us can afford to shell out fortune for makeup products? Here’s a simple Concealer recipe you can try at home, for a fraction of the cost you would shell out for a commercial concealer and offers full coverage.

Ingredients

Jojoba Oil – 1 Tbsp.
Emulsifying Wax – 2/3 Tsp.
Shea Butter – 1.5 Tsp.
Aloe Vera Gel – 1 Tbsp.
Witch Hazel – 1 Tsp.
Cocoa Powder – ½ Tsp.
Non Nano Zinc Oxide – 2 Tbsp.
Bentonite Clay – ½ Tsp.

Aloe Gel

Instructions

In a double boiler, melt Shea butter and emulsifying wax.

When it is melting add Argan Oil, Aloe Vera and Witch Hazel and whisk gently to combine. The ingredients should incorporate well and the mixture should be smooth.

Turn off the heat.

After a few minutes, add the zinc oxide, clay and cocoa powder. Add cocoa powder slowly and check for the shade – it should be 1 or 2 shades lighter than your skin. Only then, it will blend well and offer coverage, without forming dark spots on you’re your skin.

Test the coverage and color on your forehead or inner arm and determine if the shade is correct. You can also check the coverage and add more zinc oxide if you need more coverage, at this stage.

Once the combination is finalized, use a spatula and transfer to a sterilized container and let it cool down. I use a lip balm tube for easy application.

Tips to Tweak the Recipe

You can avoid the exhaustive preparation and use a lotion instead. In that case, just add the powders – cocoa powder, zinc oxide, clay and mix well. You can add Shea butter for a thicker consistency to use it from a lip balm stick.

You can add more zinc oxide for better coverage.

Cocoa powder is more suitable for medium – dark skin tones, though if you are fair, you can stick with clay or use translucent powder or mineral foundation powder instead.

You can add a few drops of essential oils for added fragrance – though make sure the oils you choose are suitable for your skin type.

You can also add Beeswax if you find the consistency watery or increase the quantity of Shea butter.

Though Cocoa Butter or other butters are suitable, I prefer Shea butter because it doesn’t trigger acne outbreaks or make skin greasy.

You can use any facial clay of your choice, instead of Bentonite Clay.

How to Use it?

You can use this as a concealer to give coverage for your entire face or use it as a spot-concealer for covering minor spots and blemishes. You can also use this as a highlighter or for contouring to accentuate your face or make it radiant.

Shelf Life

This usually lasts for a few months without much ado, though the quantity here is lesser and would be used up quickly, especially if you use it regularly.
