With summer in, there’s every need to care for our skin so it is supple, soft and happy. While going out in the sun during early or evening hours isn’t an issue, mid day sun is a problem. So, what to do after a stroll in the sun that you couldn’t avoid? An after-sun lotion is just what you need to pick your skin up!
Like I have mentioned earlier, sun isn’t something we need to be afraid of or shy away from it. It is a rich an free source of Vitamin D and our body needs Vitamin D in adequate measure for healthy functioning. The rise of sunscreens and sunblock has caused Vitamin D deficiencies around the world. It’s just misunderstood or grossly misrepresented for corporate gain – see the rise in Vitamin D supplements and it’s purchases or recommendations by physicians.
The best time to soak up sun is early morning or evenings – not midday! It’s scorching, hot and not many can withstand the fury of sun during peak summers. However, early mornings or evenings enjoy it to the fullest and top up your Vitamin D levels. Having that said, there are days or times when you can’t avoid going out in the sun during midday. So, what do you do when you find your skin abused or damaged or tanned or sunburnt upon return? This lotion is very good to fix your skin right away, by soothing it and accelerating healing so your skin’s fixed in no time.
Ingredients
Aloe Vera Extract / Juice – 2 Oz.
Shea Butter – 1 Tsp.
Emulsifying Wax – 1 Tsp.
Avocado Oil – 1 Tbsp.
Vitamin E Oil – a few Drops
German Chamomile Essential Oil – 5 Drops
Eucalyptus Oil – 5 Drops
Myrrh Essential Oil – 2 Drops
Frankincense Essential Oil – 2 Drops
Instructions
Melt Emulsifying wax in your double boiler or Microwave.
Add in the Shea Butter to it once melted.
Slowly add in the Aloe Vera Juice to your wax mixture – this way it won’t harden the wax when added in room temperature.
Stir to combine and remove from heat.
Use your hand blender to emulsify the mixture while slowly introducing the Avocado Oil, Vitamin E Oil and the Essential Oils during the blending / whipping process.
Once emulsified, transferred to sterilized container.
Done!
Tips to Tweak the Recipe
I have not used any preservative here. However, you can use them if you prefer. I prepared small batch to use without preservation. You can use Phenonip, Germaben or Optiphen though my preserved natural preservative is Rosemary Antioxidant Extract where it works.
Shelf Life
I prepare smaller batches and keep it refrigerated especially since it helps to wear it slightly cool after sun exposure. However, if you’re preparing larger batches or don’t prefer refrigeration use a preservative as without that it can go rancid or collect mold sooner due to presence of water-based ingredients along with oils and butter.
