DIY Shea Winter Lotion

Want a lotion that would keep winter skin blues at bay, so your skin can stay soft, supple and moisturized?

During winter, skin gets dry easily. Not just dry, irritated and often, parched. If you run your nails along your skin gently and see white lines along the trail, your skin isn’t moisturized enough.

We’re going to prepare a nourishing and moisturizing skin lotion that’s ideal for winter, or even extremely dry or dry skin. Lets’ take a look at the recipe.

Ingredients

Shea Butter – 4 Tbsp.
Avocado Oil – 4 Tbsp.
Vitamin E Oil Capsule – 1
Lavender Hydrosol – 3 Tbsp.
Beeswax – ¼ Tsp.
Frankincense Essential Oil – 10 Drops.

Instructions

In a double boiler, melt the Shea Butter and Beeswax.

When fully melted, remove from heat and set aside.

Let it cool down – you can also refrigerate to fasten the process.

When the mixture is cool and fairly opaque, not full solid though (it nullifies the melting step), you are good to go.

Add it to your blender and start whipping on medium or medium high.

As you blend, introduce the Avocado Oil and Vitamin E Oil slowly.

Also, slowly add the Lavender Hydrosol and continue whipping.

Both the oils and the hydrosol should be introduced slowly and throughout the whipping process.

When almost done, add the essential oil and finish whipping when the ingredients are fully blended.

Transfer to a sterilized jar and use as needed.

Tips to Tweak the Recipe

You can use Leucidal (Radish Root Extract) as a preservative, for this recipe.

You can also use Rosemary Antioxidant Extract as a preservative.

You can use any Hydrosol including Aloe Gel / Extract, Calendula Hydrosol, Rose Hydrosol, Green Tea Extract, etc.

You can modify the ratio of oils, butter and hydrosol to get a consistency that works best for you. This isn’t a very runny lotion, but more like a light whipped cream. So if you prefer lotion-like consistency tweak the ratios accordingly.

You can also add Emulsifying Wax instead of Beeswax for a real lotion consistency and texture in this recipe.

Use any carrier oil you like including Coconut Oil, Apricot Oil, Almond Oil, Argan Oil, Olive Oil, etc. I have used Avocado Oil here as it really helps the skin during winter and gives it a nice sheen.

You can swap Shea Butter for a body butter of your choice including Cocoa Butter, Mango Butter, Kokum Butter, etc.

I have used Frankincense Essential Oil here, as it is soothing and calming. Besides, it goes well with Lavender. However, choose the essential oils you like, or prefer.

The best thing about DIY recipes – you can twist, tweak and play around with the recipes to come up with something that’s your style, preference and works best for you. In other words – it is something you craft for you! So find out what you like and what’s ideal for you and use accordingly.
