DIY Alkanet Blush Stick

We all love cosmetics but the resulting breakouts are a nightmare. What if you can use cosmetics without having to worry about breakouts?

Yes, this blush is non comedogenic and you can make it real quick. Ready for the recipe? We’ll look at the ingredients and how to prepare it before launching into the whys.

Ingredients

Alkanet Powder – As Needed

Lavender Essential Oil – a few drops

Shea Butter – 1 Tsp.

Sweet Almond Oil – 1 Tsp.

Instructions

You can get Alkanet Powder in herbal stores, though if you get them as root just crush them to get a powder. You can run it in your mixer to get a fine powder. Sieve the powder to ensure the powder is fine and free from larger granules.

Melt Shea Butter in your double boiler. Once melted remove from heat.

Heat your Shea butter in a double boiler over your stove until it’s completely melted.

Add in the Sweet Almond Oil and stir to combine.

Now, add Alkanet Powder to it – it should be slightly darker than the shade you would from it when you apply. A couple of pinches should do in most cases.

Add in Lavender Essential Oil and mix to combine.

Pour into blush dispenser and let it set – it takes a few hours though you can also refrigerate to make the process faster.

Done!

How to Use the Blush Stick?

You could apply it directly on your cheeks and use your fingers to blend it in.

Instead of a dispenser you can also use a small tub if you prefer that way.

After applying blush and blending in finish with a dusting of powdered blush or face powder or face powder.

Shelf Life

The blush stick lasts for a few months but I prepare smaller batches for just one dispenser so I can rotate shades, ingredients and try different options.

Tips to Tweak the Recipe

I specifically chose Alkanet for this recipe not only because I love this pink-red hue that’s unique and spot-on. Besides, unlike other coloring options this ingredient – alkanet powder releases dye only in oil. So for a blush stick this works real good. However, you can choose any shade / coloring pigment you like – beet, berries, etc. They don’t work well like Alkanet Root though.

You can use Mica Powders for a shimmering blush, or Iron Oxide Pigments for a non-shimmering blush.

Shea Butter is ideal because it is non-comedogenic though you can use other oils or butters. Argan Oil is another good oil that you can consider for this recipe.

Adding a dash of Arrowroot Powder can bring down the shiny / oily finish. Yes, it lasts for a few minutes and then wanes off. However, adding starch reduces oil completely.

Essential oil is option and you can choose any essential oil that helps combat acne like Tea Tree Oil, Clary Sage, etc.
