Wondering why Hemp Salve is the latest rage and want to know how to prepare one for your home?

How is Hemp Oil Made?

Hemp Oil is made using Cannabis plants, though it VERY different from Marijuana! A rich source of Cannabidiol or CBD, Hemp Oil has many medicinal properties. Hemp is anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-spasmodic, etc. Many use Hemp Salve for different purposes.

Why Use Hemp Salve?

Do you know Hemp Oil can relieve pain caused due to Diabetes, Arthritis, Menstrual Cramps and just about any general Chronic pains? That’s not all! It is said to curb Psoriasis and Dermatitis symptoms effectively, according to many who use this salve for their skin.

Will I get High using Hemp? Is it Legal?

Unlike THC a part of the cannabis that makes you mellow and high, CBD doesn’t do that! This is one reason why Hemp Salve is gaining acceptance for a range of treatments again and you won’t feel lethargic or high when you use this!

Unlike Medical Marijuana, which is legal in most states but some are still in the process, CBD is perfectly legal and can be used because one doesn’t get high using it! Like mentioned earlier, it is free from THC, a reason it is legal!

Now that we’ve cleared that up, it is time to learn how to prepare the salve.

Ingredients

Sesame Oil – 1 Cup or 150 Ml
Organic Hemp (both leaves & Buds) – 15 Gms.
Beeswax – 2 ½ Tbsp.

Instructions

In your mixer or spice grinder, run the buds, leaves and stems well.

Now, add it to a glass jar and cover it with oil and cover the bottle with a lid.

In your stove, place a sauce pan and add 2 – 3” of water and heat it. When it is hot but not boiling hot, simmer it and place the jar with oil and hemp in it.

Let it simmer for a while – make sure the bottle you choose is suitable for doing this! I let it sit like this for about an hour or so. I stir the jar once or twice, taking care not to burn myself!

Let the jar cool down and repeat the process, once or twice the same day. The oil is ready for use now, though if you do the same thing for 2 – 3 days, you will get stronger Hemp Oil!

Strain the oil to a sterilized jar using cheesecloth.

Melt the Beeswax in a double boiler add it to the Hemp Oil you prepared. Mix to combine and set aside.

Alternatively, you can add the Beeswax to the Oil and place it in a saucepan like in the first step we do for Hemp Oil and let it melt. Then you can stir to combine the ingredients well.

Tips to Tweak the Recipe

You can add Essential Oils to improve the recipe, or for aroma and pick and choose the oils based on your requirement or preference. If you are preparing it for pain relief – Peppermint, Pine, Wintergreen, Cypress, Eucalyptus, Thyme, etc. are few options you can consider. If you are using for Psoriasis or Eczema, Tea Tree Oil, Lavender, Cedarwood, Roman Chamomile, Clary Sage, etc. are few options you can consider.

You can prepare the salve in one step, by adding beeswax ahead, though I prefer preparing Hemp Oil separately, and then adding Beeswax.

I have used Sesame Oil for its many skin benefits including anti-bacterial property. Also, the skin absorbs it readily. However, you can use any carrier oil you like, including Coconut Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, etc.

How to Use the Salve?

The texture of the Salve is fairly solid to see, but soft to touch, depending on where you live. Take a dollop of the Salve with dry fingers and apply where needed.
